What it is

Bloom: Roots is a cultural hair braiding workshop where girls learn to braid while having honest, grounded conversations about hair, identity, and self-worth. Hands are busy. Minds are open. The conversations that happen in these sessions are the ones that matter most.

What you will learn

Three-strand braid
Flat twist
Cornrow (session dependent)

What you take home

A hair scarf and the braid you made — plus the knowledge of what your hands can do.

The cultural layer

African braiding traditions

The roots of braiding in sub-Saharan African cultures, its role in community, celebration, and identity.

Caribbean hair culture

The significance of hair in Caribbean communities and how colonial history has shaped the journey to reclaim it.

The politics of Black hair

An honest, age-appropriate conversation about why hair matters — in workplaces, schools, and public life.
